    Department Mission

    The Department of Human Resources recognizes that a dynamic and efficient staff dedicated to excellence in education is necessary to maintain an outstanding school system. As an employer, the Roosevelt Union Free School District recognizes its responsibility for promoting the general welfare of the staff.

    1. Recruiting, selecting, and employing the most qualified personnel to staff the school system.
    2. Deploying the available personnel in a manner that ensures that they are used as effectively as possible within budget constraints.
    3. Developing the quality of human relationships necessary to obtain maximum staff performance and satisfaction.
    4. Administering the Board of Education's collective bargaining agreements.
    5. Providing staff development training for employees, which will improve the performance, retention, and promotion of employees.
    6. Developing and managing a competitive staff compensation program sufficient to attract and retain qualified employees.
    7. Conducting an employee evaluation program that will contribute to the improvement of each staff member's performance.

    Responsibilities:

    Provides general direction to Human Resources staff in carrying out all functions of the Roosevelt Union Free School District Department of Human Resources. Directly responsible for procedure development, labor relations and legal matters, grievances, strategic planning, contract negotiations, and school district staffing. Reports to the Superintendent of Schools.

    Performs various specialized administrative and personnel functions related to certified and non-certified personnel of the Roosevelt Union Free Schools, including:

    Administrative Assistant to the Assistant Superintendent;

    1. Contact/liaison with Nassau County Civil Service Commission; 
    2. Prepares official departmental communications on behalf of Assistant Superintendent;
    3. Prepares classified civil service vacancy announcements;
    4. Processes all classified applications;
    5. Acts as contact/liaison with the Employees Retirement System (ERS).

    Ms. Wendy Sawits

    Senior Personnel Clerk

    Responsibilities:

    1. Performs various specialized administrative and personnel functions related to NYSED certified teaching and supervisory personnel of the Roosevelt Union Free School District, including:
    2. Processes new certified personnel and student teachers;
    3. Prepares personnel action forms detailing new hires, change in salary or work status, resignations or terminations, co-curricular appointments, and longevity payments;
    4. Prepares certified vacancy and co-curricular announcements and postings;
    5. Assists certified staff with NYSED certification application and renewal process, and acts as contact/liaison with Nassau BOCES Certification Office;
    6. Maintains accurate and up-to-date records relating to teacher seniority, course approval, and salary advancement requests; Acts as contact/liaison with Teachers Retirement System (TRS).

    Ms. Silvia Melgarejo

    Personnel & Benefits Clerk

    Responsibilities:

    1. Performs all functions related to the school district’s health benefits plans, including: 
    2. Maintains all health benefits enrollment data;
    3. Maintains employee records, including leave accrual balances;
    4. Acts as a contact/liaison school district’s health insurance broker;  
    5. Works closely with the Payroll Office to ensure appropriate employee pay;
    6. Conducts new employee health benefits orientations.

    Ms. Olga Abreu

    Bilingual Clerk-Typist

    Maintains accurate attendance of all employees in the district through Absence Management (formerly known as Aesop and with Time and Attendance (formerly known as VeriTime)

    1. Processes Leave of absence forms received on a daily basis and reconcile this information in Absence Management.
    2. Runs Absence Management reports that are then rolled over to Envision monthly.
    3. Runs Time and Attendance reports on a daily basis and notifies all building administrators of missing personnel.

    Provides a variety of daily, weekly, monthly, and year-end reports to administrators.

    Manages all district’s employees’ yearly allocations (sick, personal, vacation, personal)

    Manages payouts for personal days and vacation days as well as payouts for retirees.

    Manages Donations of days, change of status forms, and barcodes for all employees.
