• Third Graders Have Heart!

As a part of the Project-Based Learning initiative, Mrs. Schiano and Mrs. Zahl’s third grade class at Centennial Avenue School researched the impacts of Hurricane Sandy on our area. One aspect of our project was sponsoring a “Hearts for Hurricane Relief” fundraiser. Students in our class worked diligently cutting hundreds of paper hearts, counting them out and placing them in envelopes to be distributed to each class in our school. Next, all of the students in our building were invited to purchase a heart for one dollar, and the donations started pouring in! Some students chose to decorate their hearts or write brief notes of inspiration. As we collected and counted the donations, we were overwhelmed by the generosity of our student body. After one week, we had raised $675! The amount collected will be donated to our local chapter of the American Red Cross in order to help those who have been impacted by Hurricane Sandy. We would like to thank all of the students and staff and Centennial Avenue/Ulysses Byas for making our fundraiser a huge success!
