Roosevelt School District will Honor 50 Scholars at Second Annual Seal of Biliteracy Ceremony

Students will be recognized for multilingual proficiency and academic excellence

The Roosevelt Union Free School District will proudly host its second annual New York State Seal of Biliteracy Ceremony on May 29, 2025 celebrating 50 Roosevelt High School scholars who will earn the prestigious New York State Seal of Biliteracy. This distinction honors students who have demonstrated high levels of proficiency in English and one or more additional languages.

Held at Roosevelt High School, the ceremony will feature heartfelt speeches from students delivered in a variety of languages. Students will share their language-learning journeys and highlight the significance of biliteracy in both their personal growth and future aspirations.

“The number of students who earned the Seal of Biliteracy nearly doubled this year, which is a testament to the dedication of our educators and the diligence and ambition of our students,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Shawn Wightman. “Hosting this ceremony for a second year highlights our staff’s commitment to ensuring our scholars are supported, empowered, and globally ready.”

The New York State Seal of Biliteracy distinguishes students who have achieved mastery in multiple languages, offering them a valuable credential that enhances college and career opportunities. This year’s ceremony builds on the success of the district’s inaugural event in 2024, which recognized 21 students, the first in Roosevelt’s history to receive the award.

This achievement reflects the collaborative efforts of district leadership and staff, including Superintendent Dr. Shawn Wightman, Director of ENL/Bilingual Programs and World Languages K-12 Xiomara Gonzalez, Roosevelt High School Interim Principal Carleen Henry, Assistant Principal Ms. Yaneris Carbone

Looking ahead, Roosevelt Union Free School District plans to expand its biliteracy offerings to include Mandarin, further strengthening its commitment to developing globally competent and culturally aware students.
