Ceremony Honors 37 Students Who Became Proficient in Multiple Languages

ROOSEVELT, NEW YORK (APRIL 2025)—The Roosevelt School District recently held its second annual Seal of Biliteracy ceremony, honoring 37 Roosevelt High School scholars who earned the New York State Seal of Biliteracy for multilingual proficiency in English and one or more other languages. Students gave speeches in multiple languages, shared their journeys and explained the importance of biliteracy during a commemorative celebration.

“The number of students who earned the Seal of Biliteracy nearly doubled this year, which is a testament to the dedication of our educators and the diligence and ambition of our students,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Shawn Wightman. “Hosting this ceremony for a second year highlights our staff’s commitment to ensuring our scholars are supported, empowered and globally ready.”

The New York State Seal of Biliteracy allows students to thrive in both academic pursuits and future careers in an increasingly interconnected global society. Student recipients will be able to have this State Seal on their record moving into their careers as a status symbol to represent their biliteracy in an increasingly diverse society. Roosevelt held its first Seal of Biliteracy ceremony last year, recognizing the first 21 students in the District’s history to earn the state recognition.

Earning the Seal of Biliteracy would not be possible without Roosevelt’s committed staff, including Superintendent Dr. Wightman, Roosevelt High School Interim Principal Carleen Henry, Interim Assistant Principal Dr. Maria Vineyard and Director of ENL/Bilingual Programs and World Languages Xiomara Gonzalez.

The District plans to keep expanding its biliteracy offerings in the coming years to help students become proficient in Italian, American Sign Language and Mandarin.
