Scholarship Basketball Game Commemorates Late Coach and Teacher

ROOSEVELT, NEW YORK (JANUARY 2026)—For the past 35 years, the Roosevelt School District has proudly honored the life and legacy of longtime educator and coach Morris Motor Brandon by awarding scholarships to graduating seniors who exemplify his dedication, leadership and commitment to community. This tradition continued on Saturday, January 17th when the District hosted its annual Morris Brandon Scholarship Day.

The Morris Brandon Scholarship Day featured an exciting day of friendly competition as the Roosevelt Rough Riders faced off against the Malverne High School Mules in both Varsity and Junior Varsity matchups. The event brought together students, staff, families and community members to celebrate athletics while supporting scholarships for Roosevelt High School seniors.

During the games, standout student-athletes were recognized for their exceptional performances and leadership on the court. Meliya Jackson was named Most Valuable Player in the girls’ game, while Jacob Hines earned MVP honors in the boys’ competition.

“Morris Motor Brandon was a mentor, role model and pillar of the community to everyone he taught and worked with in Roosevelt,” said the Superintendent of Schools. “This annual event not only celebrates his lasting impact but reinforces our district’s commitment to uplifting students who embody his values of perseverance, leadership and service.”

Morris Brandon served the Roosevelt School District for more than two decades as a dedicated social studies teacher, basketball coach and co-supervisor of the Team Approach Center. His influence extended far beyond the classroom and gymnasium, shaping the lives of countless students through mentorship, discipline and encouragement.
