Roosevelt High School JROTC Cadets
Honor Our Nation’s Heroes at 24th Annual Event
ROOSEVELT, NEW YORK (SEPTEMBER 2025)—The Roosevelt High School JROTC cadets proudly represented the Roosevelt School District at the 24th annual Tunnel to Towers 5K Run and Walk on September 28th in New York City. The cadets lined the 5K route, holding banners that memorialized fallen first responders and honored the legacy of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
“We are incredibly proud of our JROTC cadets for representing Roosevelt with honor,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Shawn Wightman. “Their involvement in this important event reflects the District’s core values of leadership, service and compassion, which we strive to instill in all our students.”
The cadets’ presence reflected their unwavering commitment to service, respect, and remembrance, serving as a powerful symbol of support at this nationally recognized event. Their participation underscored the Roosevelt School District's dedication to community engagement and the importance of teaching civic responsibility through action.
The Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk commemorates the heroic final footsteps of FDNY firefighter Stephen Siller, who ran through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001. Since its inception in 2002 with 1,500 participants, the event has grown into one of the country’s largest and most meaningful 5Ks.
Proceeds from the event benefit the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides mortgage-free homes to Gold Star families and the families of fallen first responders with young children, combats veteran homelessness, and builds smart homes for catastrophically injured veterans and first responders.
