Community Comes Together for a Homecoming Themed “Around the World”

ROOSEVELT, NEW YORK (OCTOBER 2025)—The Roosevelt School District recently brought together students, faculty, families and community members for a joyful and spirited Homecoming weekend. This year’s theme was “Around the World,” and showcased Roosevelt’s commitment to cultural pride, diversity and unity.

“Our Homecoming is more than just a game, it’s a celebration of our students, our culture, and the unity of our Roosevelt community,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Shawn Wightman. “The pride and participation we saw throughout the week speaks volumes about our district's heart and spirit.”

Prior to homecoming weekend, all five schools in the district, including Centennial Avenue, Washington Rose and Ulysses Byas Elementary School, Roosevelt Middle School and Roosevelt High School, participated in Spirit Week, a fun-filled celebration designed to foster school spirit and camaraderie among students and staff.

The week began with “Dress Like a Teacher Day,” during which students emulated their favorite educators. On Tuesday, students took part in “Twin Day,” dressing alike with friends to show their unity. Wednesday was “Character Day,” with students arriving in costumes inspired by beloved characters from books, cartoons and movies. On Thursday, “Throwback Thursday” gave students a chance to represent the fashion of decades past. Spirit Week concluded with “Blue and Gold Day” on Friday, during which students proudly wore Roosevelt gear and school colors to show their Rough Rider pride.

Each school hosted a coronation ceremony, where students were named to their respective Homecoming Courts. At Roosevelt High School, the Homecoming Court included ninth-grade students Zihir Sinclair and Adara Benjamin, sophomores Keith Boykin and Madison Taylor, juniors Jeremy Acosta and Paige Williams, and senior football sweethearts Amerrai Denny and Aniyla Kaine. The highlight of the ceremony was the crowning of this year’s Homecoming King Christopher Pereira and Queen Krisangley Torres.

In keeping with the district-wide theme of global unity, the Roosevelt Board of Education participated in the Homecoming parade dressed in outfits and carrying flags representing various countries around the world. School principals, faculty, students, and PTA members also marched in the parade, proudly showcasing their creativity through handcrafted banners and themed floats that celebrated the district’s rich cultural diversity.

On Friday, pep rallies were held across the district to energize students ahead of Saturday’s big game at Roosevelt High School. The Roosevelt Rough Riders faced off against the Bellmore JFK Cougars in a competitive matchup. Despite a strong effort, the Rough Riders lost with a final score of 33-14.

The Roosevelt School District extends its sincere gratitude to all students, staff, families, and community members who contributed to making Homecoming 2025 a vibrant and memorable success.
